To the Duffy Books in Homes Team

A big thank you for your continued support by way of free books for all our children. We had a fun assembly with our Duffy Books HERO Adrian ‘Showtime’ Boyd earlier this week.  The children and staff were thoroughly entertained by him. We really appreciate the time and effort everyone puts into the running of this special programme.

Thanks again from all of us

Brodie Kane - Role Model

Brodie Kane is a reporter for TVNZ on shows such as Breakfast, 7 Sharp and Fair Go. To us she is 'Brodie Kane - Duffy Role Model!'

Why did you want to become a Duffy Role Model?
I didn’t even think twice about it when I got asked. It makes sense to share the love of reading and how valuable it is.

How did you find going out and visiting the schools?
I loved it, it gave me the warm fuzzies! We are often so busy in our day to day jobs that we forget how special, beautiful and important the kids of New Zealand are. Their faces light up when they get their very own book, it is so rewarding!

Have you always loved to read?
I have, I am always reading to my niece and nephew when I see them. It’s so cool to see the kids are still reading “the old favourites” that I read when I was young – a good book never ages.

How important is reading to you?
It is so important to be able to read. We read every day and perhaps we take it for granted. From filling out a driver’s license form to applying for a job, we need to keep reminding our kids how it is part of our lives and is so crucial to succeeding in whatever you want to do.

What would you say to inspire new Role Models to join the Duffy programme?
If anyone got the opportunity – do it! It is so important to engage with our kids, inspire them and share messages about reading. It was wonderful, I feel lucky to be a Role Model.

What was your highlight?
Manurewa Central put in so much effort to make me feel welcome, and decorate each classrooms box of books! They found pictures of me on TV and also surf lifesaving. Hearing the Duffy song was also a highlight, especially the hip hop version.

Sum up your Role Model experience in 20 words…
One of the most worthwhile things I have been involved with since leaving school, worth its weight in gold!
