Barbara Algie MBE otherwise known as 'Aunty Bee' was educated at Te Papapa Primary School.
She enjoyed a successful secretarial career as Personal Assistant to the British Consul-General in Auckland for forty years and was awarded the MBE in 1969 by Her Majesty the Queen for services to the British Government.
Barbara's very varied life has included a sporting career as Auckland Table Tennis Champion and New Zealand Mixed Doubles Table Tennis Champion. She is also a keen golfer and was made a Life Member of the Pupuke Golf Club Inc. in 1988.
Barbara has been a prolific writer for many years. Her poem ‘The Anzac Poppy’ was accepted for publication in an overseas anthology. In 1995, after Team New Zealand’s successful America's Cup campaign, a tongue-in-cheek poem ‘How we Won the Cup’ was received and commented on by the late Sir Peter Blake in San Diego, immediately after the final race. She has had many articles and poems published in the SPCA Quarterly Magazine ‘Animals' Voice’ and in 2003 self-published a book ‘Zino - The Cat who Thought He Was Somebody Else’ which can be found in all the libraries on the North Shore as well as in schools all over the top half of the North Island.
