Funding
Schools are invited to join the Books in Homes programme and commit to paying half the cost of Book Offer One, Book Offer Three and Caught Being Good books. Books in Homes then finds a sponsor to form a partnership with the school and pay the other 50 percent cost of the books. Sponsors include businesses, clubs, families, friends and individuals.

Book Offers One and Three
During Book Offers One and Three students select two books to take home and keep. There are approximately 50 books to choose from each time and the titles are different from one offer to the next. A committee of principals, teachers and Books in Homes staff selects the books on offer. Once the selection is finalised, brochures with the available books are distributed to every student on the programme.

Book Offer Two - Government Book Week
In June/July all students get to choose a fifth book to take home and keep. Government sponsors this book offer.

Caught Being Good
Students have the opportunity to receive extra books through the Caught Being Good scheme. Every school receives a supply of books and certificates to be given out at weekly assemblies on a ratio of one book per 30 students. The schools reward children who are Caught Being Good.

Caught Being Good Reading to a Child
This award encourages, recognises and rewards adults who read to children at home. Each term, Duffy kids are given reading logs to take home and fill in. The adult who reads the most to a child over the course of a week is presented with a book and a certificate.

Caught Being a Good Mum, Dad, and Grandparent
Duffy Books in Homes has established awards to celebrate mums, dads and grandparents. These awards acknowledge parents and caregivers who support Duffy kids at home and school and act as positive role models in their lives.

Role Model Assemblies
Twice a year, the Duffy Books in Homes team arranges for New Zealand achievers from all walks of life to visit every Duffy school and talk to the students about how reading has helped them succeed. In addition to promoting our message 'It's Cool to Read', Role Models present Duffy kids with the books they chose during the most recent book offer.

The Duffy Theatre
Each year Duffy Books in Homes commissions a writer/director to devise a 45-minute show to tour all Duffy schools. This show brings the character of Duffy to life and reinforces the importance of reading in a fun and interactive way. Duffy Books in Homes provides notes for teachers to use as a learning tool in the classroom prior to and after the show.

Kids At Home - KaH
Kids at Home (KaH) enables Duffy kids the joy of presenting younger siblings with books on their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th birthdays. The aim of this initiative is to expose preschool children to words, colours, numbers and story lines and kick-start a lifelong love of books. Each 5-year-old new entrant receives a start school pack comprising a cool book bag and Duffy's Start School Activity Book.

School Leader Assembly
For this assembly one or two students from a local high school visit Duffy kids and talk about life at secondary school level, their goals and aspirations, and why reading is important to them. Books in Homes thanks these secondary students by providing each Duffy school with a certificate and book to present to the School Leader(s).

Mainfreight Award For Excellence In Attitude
This annual award, sponsored by Mainfreight Ltd, is given to one senior student with an excellent attitude at each school's end of year assembly. The recipient receives a silver cup, a certificate, and a quality reference book.

Duffy

Read About It! - The Duffy Song
A hit single written by Jan Hellriegel and Dave Dobbyn, and performed by top local artists especially for Duffy kids. It's a catchy song that the kids love and sing loud and proud, accompanied by actions.
