How you can support the programme

The philosophy is simple. Kids who can't read become adults who can't communicate. We aim to change that. We'll put books into the homes of every New Zealand child who, through no fault of their own, normally wouldn't own any.

Camberley School in Hastings is our founder school. Since the programme began in their school , "we have gone from strength to strength" says principal Peter Johnstone. Here are some findings from Camberley:

  • A closeness between community and school
  • Improved attitudes all round
  • No bullying
  • No truancy
  • Vandalism has fallen from $15,000 to $1,500 a year
  • Proud students
  • A willingness to cooperate
  • A hunger to learn
  • A love of books
  • A respect of property, each other, and one's self
  • Duffy kids take these qualities to High School with them
And some stories to tell:
  • An ex-pupil whose ambition is to be the first Maori dux of the prominent local private girl's school she attends - she is well on her way to achieving that goal.
  • Two parents who have gone back to high school to finish their education and make up the time they wasted before they realised it meant something - so they can show their kids that's what they expect for them too.
  • The prison inmate who wants to learn to read "because I've got kids at Camberley and they've got all these books there and when I get out of here, I want to be able to read with them so they won't end up in here like me." The same inmate said to his fellow inmates, "Do you want to share a cell with your son?" ANOTHER CYCLE BROKEN.

There are several ways of supporting Books in Homes. You may wish to sponsor a school and enjoy the partnership that develops as a result. Or you may wish to make a donation towards the cost of the books for unsponsored schools and various other elements of the Books in Homes programme.

Any contribution is welcome and appreciated.
